Bertus' journey at Moba

From newspaper ad to lifelong career

In 1979, Bertus Dekker's father saw an advertisement in the Veluws Dagblad newspaper. Bertus was sixteen at the time, had just left school, and was looking for work. "To be honest, Moba didn't immediately appeal to me," he laughs. "But it grew on me." Shortly afterwards, his journey at Moba began.

Bertus started out in the construction of the packing lanes and quickly became a team leader. After a year of military service, he ended up in frame construction. In the meantime, he followed a vocational training course that combined learning and working.

Grow by doing

From 1984 to 2014, he worked as a service engineer. "I visited both 'farmer Piet' on the corner and large automated sorting companies all over the world."

One of his first international experiences was an adventure right from the start: "I had never flown before and had to go to England for an installation. Due to problems with the plane, I ended up at a completely different airport than planned, haha. In those two weeks of installation, I learned more English than in four years of school!"

Close-knit teams and customer contact

What Bertus appreciates most about Moba is the collegiality. "In service, we are still a very close-knit group. That's important, otherwise you can't keep it up for so long." Customer contact also gives him a lot of satisfaction. "There's nothing better than leaving the customer happy."
A memorable moment? "I had to drive to southern Germany at six in the morning to fix a problem. After fifteen minutes, the machine was up and running again. The customer was so happy that he offered me schnapps and a crate of beer."

From service technician to coordinator

After thirty years as a service engineer, Bertus now works as Service Coordinator Planning & Work Preparation. "Many colleagues come to me for information. That's fun to do, and I enjoy sharing things." He is sometimes also involved in the sale of systems. "For example, I recently helped with the preliminary work for a large order to find the right solution, which involved a new building, the entire layout, and interior design."
He is also a regular at trade shows worldwide: from Atlanta, Hanover, and Utrecht to Den Bosch. "I do the setup and help run the trade show. It's very intensive, but a lot of fun."

Life at Moba

After 46 years at Moba, Bertus has never regretted his decision. "If I had to do it again, I would." He is not the only one: "No one here thinks it's strange to have been at Moba for 46 years, because there are many others who have worked here for a long time or have done so in the past. There are still colleagues who started at the same time as me, even on the same day. That proves that Moba is an employer where you feel at home."

Bertus' advice to future colleagues

“Welcome to Moba! It's a great company with great colleagues. If you fit in, it's a great job, whatever you end up doing.” He particularly recommends the position of service engineer: “Challenging, varied, requires great problem-solving skills, and is very rewarding for the customer.”
